Carbon Review

Carbon Poker is a fresh new site that shines by its competition and variety of gamesCarbon offers a very competitive 100% deposit match bonus on deposits up to $500, meaning you can earn up to an additional $500 for free through playing games at Carbon. You’re given 10% of your deposit bonus immediately, so for a $500 deposit, you would have $550 available in your account right away. The remaining 90% of your bonus is earned through collecting comp points (why not carb points we wonder? We suppose collecting ‘carbs’ would have a negative connotation to the poker playing community’s more discerning eaters). Regardless, comp points is what you’re after, and these points are collected through tournaments entries, and through real money games of any ilk. The comp points awarded per tournament entry are displayed on each tournament’s page. How many points are earned per regular money game is left as somewhat of a mystery, as the website does not have any sort of schematic detailing their distribution. The timeframe you must collect your points by is also left unclear, so we were somewhat disappointed with the lack of thoroughness shown in their documentation. One thing that is made clear is that any withdrawals will void the rest of your bonus, so you’ll want to avoid taking any money out before you’ve collected it all. Nonetheless, after every 2500 comp points you collect you’ll earn another $10 of your bonus, deposited into your account immediately. The small payment increments are a nice change from some of the other sites, allowing you to get at your money with more regularity and have a steady stream available. There are additional ways to earn double points as well, either through starting your own table and/or through playing at a table with 4 or more players, allowing you to potentially earn as much as 4X points for each money game. Your initial deposit bonus also gains you entry into a $1,000 freeroll tournament, and entries into new depositor tournaments for 14 days. Comp points collected can also be used to enter future tournaments, or gain access to special offers. Carbon Poker also claims that comp points are usable at their comp points store to purchase items, though when we toured the site, the comp store webpage was either down, or has not yet been implemented. This would be a great additional feature in the future should it come to fruition. Despite being one of the newer kids on the block, getting its start in 2007, Carbon Poker has quickly built a solid player base, in large part to its excellent game diversity, outstanding promotions, and nice software package. You’ll find card games here that you won’t find at many other sites, and though they don’t get much traffic, it’s certainly a nice addition nonetheless. Games like Razz, Deuce to 7 Lowball, Ace to 5 Lowball, and H.O.R.S.E are some of their more offbeat games available. The full collection of usual suspects is here as well and garnering the most action as you would expect, including Hold’em, Omaha, 7 and 5 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw. Games are available in the full range of pot and table styles as well. The Carbon Poker promotions and tournaments are a major factor in their growing success. They keep players on their toes and excited with a host of unique features not available anywhere else. From Ladies Only Tourneys, to Bounty Tournaments, there’s plenty of fun action to be found that gives these popular and well travelled games a unique twist. Bounty tournaments award a payout to every player who knocks out another player. These tournaments are a great way to quickly earn back your entry fee and possibly more, without having to go through a gruelling, hours-long tournament to getting a money position. Some tournaments have bounties as high as 100% of the buy-in, meaning you earn back your entry fee by knocking out a single player. Of course these bounties do come out of the overall pot, so if you did end up winning a bounty tourney, your overall winnings would be slightly less than in a regular tournament. Even so, it’s a great way to play poker, and make allow you to try out different strategies at different points throughout the tournaments. Another unique feature is the Deal It Twice option, which shows up in real money no limit games. If, after the flop, two players have gone all-in, they can both agree to deal it twice, whereby two sets of river and turn cards will be dealt. This feature may not come into play often, especially as someone who feels they have the stronger hand will not want to give their opponent more outs, but it’s a very unique feature either way. Plenty of additional features exist as well, such as Accolades, which awards players with unique trophies for special events, bad beat jackpots, and much more. The Carbon Poker software is excellent, both functionally and aesthetically, using powerful vector graphics to ensure no drop in image quality no matter the window size. Rooms have a very clean, modern look, and the fonts are all clear and easily viewable. The game client is fully customizable, and you can even attach trophies or accolades to your avatar to show off during games. One disappoint is that hand histories and game data cannot be exported from the software. A very nice software client, great tournaments and features, and a growing player base make Carbon Poker a winner. While the website has some holes, the actual content is bulletproof, and with many deposit and withdrawal options, it’s easier than ever to get your game on at Carbon.
